The total count of victims from the UPS cargo plane that caught fire and crashed has risen to 13, as confirmed by official statements.
Official's Statement
“On my way to the Union’s memorial service, I was informed of a 13th person that lost their life as a result of the aircraft accident,” expressed the city mayor in a social media post. “My prayers is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were killed in this recent tragedy. We will overcome this collectively.”
Casualties Identified
An announcement from the carrier identified the pilots on board the jet as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts reach out to all staff member who has been touched and all in our Louisville region – supporting you and making sure you receive the care and assistance you need is our main concern,” the firm’s communication read.
Inquiry Findings
National investigators disclosed that the freight aircraft’s port side wing caught fire and an engine detached soon after takeoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, resulting in the plane to fall and burst into a fireball.
The NTSB announced it is probing the aircraft’s upkeep logs, that was in the state for repairs a period prior to the crash.
Flight tracking data revealed the plane was on the ground in San Antonio, Texas from early September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this jet was located in that city,” said an investigator on Thursday, without a precise period. “We will examine every piece of repairs that was performed, from the San Antonio time, all the way to the time of the trip.”
Findings of Vital Items
The pilot’s recorder and flight data recorder were recovered, and the engine was found on the tarmac.
The units – known as data containers – were built to withstand crash impacts and intense fire from infernos, and they looked to be undamaged when discovered amid the remains. Authorities plan on analyzing recordings from the recorders.
The plane’s final data recordings showed an altitude of that level and a speed of that speed before the impact.
Maintenance Record
Per aviation authority documents dated last month, a crack on a structural piece within the tank area needed repairs.
Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which stated it supplies airframe maintenance for the carrier’s aircraft and runs a repair facility in San Antonio, declined to provide remarks, but stated it would work closely when officials reached out it.
Activities Continue
In the meantime, the hub operations resumed that evening with its overnight or nighttime procedure, official Jim Mayer stated. All three landing strips at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also open again.
The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the firm’s largest. The center hires in excess of 20,000 people in the region, manages three hundred trips each day and organizes in excess of four hundred thousand items per hour.
Community Support
A candlelight vigil was conducted on the evening of 6 November by the regional worker’s group, which supports workers at the aviation hub, the company’s primary freight center.
Worker representatives, which represents UPS workers, commenced the memorial with a period of reflection at the evening hour, the rough time of the accident before.
“This event was so sudden, so unforeseen,” the leader told the group of attendees. “No one had a opportunity to bid farewell to any one of those who we have mourned.”
