Wolff Set to Sell Stake Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Growth

The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
